Practical studies with excellent career prospects

On the Master’s programme in International Tourism Management, you will deepen your knowledge of the tourism industry. The programme is open to Bachelor’s graduates from all disciplines, regardless of whether you have already studied tourism or are coming from a different field.

  • Take your knowledge to the next level: you’ll become an expert in the tourism industry and acquire the knowledge and skills you need as a specialist or manager in one of the world’s most important economic sectors.
  • Learn what matters – straight from the field: through projects, case studies and work placements with tourism companies, you’ll gain valuable experience and build a professional network.
  • The choice is yours: if you have earned at least 210 ECTS credits with your Bachelor’s degree, you can complete your Master’s programme in just three semesters. If you wish to include a period of study abroad or a work placement, or if you completed your Bachelor’s degree with 180 ECTS credits, you will study for four semesters.

Your career prospects

Tourism is a major economic sector and a key employer in Germany. Digitalisation and increasing sustainability requirements are transforming the industry. There is a demand for skilled professionals who can help shape this transformation.

This degree programme prepares you for careers in almost all areas of tourism and transport.

Travel Organisation & Sales

In the travel planning department, you will put together package holidays, coordinating with hotels, airlines and other local partners. You will negotiate terms, calculate prices and ensure that the end result is a well-rounded travel package. In doing so, you will keep an eye on key performance indicators and ensure that the package is commercially viable. In travel sales, you then ensure that the packages reach the right customers, whether in a travel agency, online or via other sales channels.

You’ll be well suited to this role if you enjoy negotiating, keeping an eye on the market and take pleasure in putting together attractive offers.

Event management

Whether it’s a trade fair, a conference or a corporate trip: you plan and organise events from start to finish. This involves booking venues, artists, staff and service providers, obtaining permits and keeping an eye on the budget. During the event, you coordinate all processes and ensure that everything runs smoothly. You work closely with clients.

For this role, you’ll need organisational skills, a passion for teamwork and the ability to keep a cool head, even in stressful situations.

Hotel Management

In the hotel industry, you will take responsibility for the entire operation or specific areas such as reception, housekeeping or catering. You will plan staffing and budgets, ensure guest satisfaction, manage occupancy rates and develop pricing strategies. You will also analyse key performance indicators and determine appropriate actions.

If you enjoy working with people, can keep a cool head even in stressful situations and would like to take on leadership responsibilities, a career in hotel management is the right choice for you.

Regional tourism development

Tourist destinations need people who know their strengths and promote them to the wider world. They market regions, towns and countries both at home and abroad, develop offers for visitors and support local businesses. Their aim is to make a holiday destination attractive to travellers whilst safeguarding the interests of all those involved. To this end, you maintain relationships with public authorities, local councils, the retail sector, the hotel industry and the hospitality sector. Interaction with other tourism service providers is also part of your day-to-day work.

Diplomatic skills and strong communication skills are essential in this profession. An interest in political contexts is an advantage.

Mode of transport management

Mobility is a key part of the tourism industry and an exciting career path. You’ll work for airlines, railways, coach operators, cruise lines or car hire companies. Your responsibilities range from planning routes and capacity, through to pricing, and collaborating with tour operators and sales partners.

With a flair for logistics, economic principles and figures, this is the perfect field for you.

Business Travel Management

Within organisations, clear structures ensure that business travel runs smoothly. In business travel management, you organise trips for companies and ensure that staff travel safely, efficiently and within budget. In this role, you plan processes, develop travel policies and liaise with service providers. You may work either for specialist business travel agencies or directly within a company’s travel management department.

As well as organisational skills and a structured approach to work, negotiation skills when dealing with airlines, rail operators and hotels, as well as a keen awareness of costs, will also be of great help to you.

Course content

In the first semester, you will deepen your knowledge of general business administration. An introductory module on specialised business administration in the tourism sector will familiarise you with the specific characteristics of organisations within the tourism industry. You will then choose your own individual specialisation within international tourism management, entirely in line with your interests. You can choose from the full range of tourism stakeholders:

  • Tour operator and travel distribution management
  • Transport management
  • Regional tourism development
  • Hotel management
  • Business travel management
  • Event Management

Foreign-language and intercultural modules complement your degree programme and open up new perspectives for you in an international context.

Right from the start, practical projects and real-world case studies complement your theoretical training. In the final semester, you’ll develop practical solutions to real-world challenges as part of the ‘Business Case Study’. Whether through a business simulation or a case study conducted in close collaboration with a company, you’ll gain deep insight into the world of international tourism management.

In addition, in the four-semester programme option, you can choose to integrate a work placement semester into your studies. During this, you will spend at least 20 weeks at a company of your choice. You will gain valuable professional experience, build up industry-specific knowledge and apply your theoretical knowledge in practice.

To complete your degree, you will write your Master’s thesis.
