Worms is not a faceless, mass university, but quite the opposite: a small, almost family-like institution of higher education. Concentrated in one place, not scattered across several sites. With the campus at its heart, as befits a university. And all lecture theatres and other facilities are within a few minutes’ walk. Quite simply, a university with a personal touch.

Class sizes here are also manageable. They are generally similar to those of a school class and thus correspond to the environment our ‘first-year students’ are already familiar with. In seminars, they are even smaller. The small-group approach is an integral part of Worms University of Applied Sciences’ philosophy. This is because it guarantees better, more personalised support – and thereby increases the likelihood of students completing their studies promptly and, above all, successfully. It also gives lecturers the opportunity to have a personal word with students. Here, students (and lecturers) are still people – not just numbers.

Worms University of Applied Sciences is a ‘university of applied sciences’ (HAW), and we are fully committed to this. A practical focus is in our DNA. You won’t find the much-cited ‘ivory tower’ here: All our lecturers have at least five years’ professional experience in the field they teach and know what is required in practice. This is not to say that we disregard theory – quite the contrary. However, by constantly linking it to practical application, knowledge becomes clear and understandable, which is exactly how it should be.

Worms University of Applied Sciences sees itself as a research-oriented university of applied sciences. This is because we are firmly convinced that universities that conduct research offer their students a better, more interesting and more up-to-date education. That is why we also make a conscious effort to support our own early-career researchers by offering PhD positions – in other words, the opportunity to obtain a doctoral degree whilst in permanent employment.

Internationality is another key characteristic and a core belief of Worms University of Applied Sciences: a quarter of our students come from abroad, and with this proportion, the small Worms University of Applied Sciences ranks among the top 20 of all German universities. We welcome the world to our beautiful location on the Rhine! We have partnerships with 220 universities worldwide where our students can spend a semester abroad, gaining not only valuable knowledge and unforgettable experiences but also intercultural skills.

Many universities do not look very inviting from the outside, with unattractive and not always clean buildings and outdated facilities. It’s different here. Worms University of Applied Sciences underwent a complete refurbishment 15 years ago and has since been expanded with new buildings. As well as teaching rooms, we also offer our students study and group work rooms, as well as computer rooms and laboratories. Incidentally, our IT systems are also state-of-the-art. And because we’re always striving to improve, we’re also experimenting with innovative classroom designs based on the latest scientific findings. In short: we offer the kind of study environment you’d hope for.

Worms isn’t Frankfurt or Munich. That much is clear. But it doesn’t cost nearly as much either. Whether it’s rent (important!) or pizza, a gym membership or beer and shots at the bar: Worms is easy on a student’s budget – yet still offers a high quality of life and leisure activities!
