Student Finance Office
Our mission is to help those who, due to their financial circumstances, are unable to access appropriate education.
Financial assistance from the state is available only upon application. Eligibility depends on the applicant’s personal and financial circumstances (and their parents’ income). As a rule, both German and international students are eligible for funding.
International students are explicitly referred to Section 8 of the BAföG (nationality) in this regard.

Who? How? What? Where? When? – Frequently asked general questions.
Both German and international students are eligible for BAföG.
BAföG funding is generally available for Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes, provided that the course for which financial support is sought is commenced before the applicant reaches the age of 45.
The application must be submitted using the official forms provided for this purpose.
The forms are available at: www.bafoeg.de or directly from the Student Finance Office.
The completed forms, together with supporting documents, must be submitted to the Student Finance Office. They can be handed in in person during office hours, sent by post, by email or submitted via BAföGdigital to the relevant Student Finance Office.
A funding period (BWZ) is the period for which funding is set/approved. It usually covers two semesters or 12 months. Once this period has expired, a new application for funding must be submitted.
Example
If the application is submitted for the 2023 summer semester, the funding period is set as follows:
March 2023 to February 2024
For students living at home, the basic allowance is €534.00
For students who do not live at home, the basic allowance is €855.00
In addition, there may be contributions towards health insurance of €102.00 and €35.00 towards long-term care insurance, if the student is required to pay contributions themselves.
Students also receive a childcare allowance of €160.00 for each of their own children under the age of 14 who live in their household.
The application must be submitted to the relevant student finance office at the university or university of applied sciences where the student is to commence their studies.

Once the application has been submitted in full, the processing time is approximately one to two months.
If the application is incomplete, you will receive a letter (by post or email) from the Student Finance Office requesting the missing documents, which you must submit within the specified deadline.
Initial applications may be submitted as soon as you have been admitted to the relevant college or university. Funding begins in the month in which lectures commence or in which the application is received by the Student Finance Office.
Renewal applications should be submitted two to three months before the end of the current grant period to ensure a seamless continuation of funding.
Example
If the current funding period ends in March 2023, the renewal application should be submitted as early as January 2023.
